Miyoko serves up a platter of her artisan vegan cheese – endless variety

Which is perfection. For as I told the team at Miyoko’s Kitchen, I can’t help but think that snapping up any of the collections would make perfect holiday gifts.

You can even have it shipped to friends or family direct.

It will solve a whole lot of holiday head scratching about “What should I give___ for Christmas?”

Because believe me, everyone loves this cheese – from die hard omnivores to live-it-up vegans.

You could even order an assortment, open the box and give a different cheese to each person on your family-for-dinner holiday list – the cheeses come in classy  individually labelled boxes –  or serve as part of pre-dinner finger food.

That is if you don’t eat it all yourself first.

Backstory

The story of how Miyoko started creating these cheeses is well told in the introduction of her book Artisan Vegan Cheese.

What I’m talking about is my first taste of Miyoko’s cheese, which took place in December 2013. And yes, between you and me, that’s reason enough that this date would stand out as a red-letter on anyone’s calendar.

It was on that day that there was one of those very fun “Pop-Ups” that seem to be sweeping the nation – and I had offered to come down to the city to help  my friend Miyoko schlep and display some cheese at a Pop-up in happening in San Francisco.

In Miyoko’s kitchen – literally – packing up cheese for the San Francisco Pop-Up – and before Miyoko’s Kitchen exploded on the marketplace with Miyoko’s signature, unsurpassed in elegance and taste artisan vegan cheese

I helped Miyoko pack up at  least three coolers of assorted cheeses. After warming up with a hike through the hills behind her home followed by a short drive to the city, we set up shop at the Pop-up. In seconds, samples were being snagged and cheese was selling like crazy.

Of course, I was in charge of the samples, which gave me plenty of opportunities to siphon off a few tastes for myself – repeatedly.

Typical expression after you taste Miyoko’s Artisan Vegan Cheese. My first taste of Double Cream Chive was caught on camera..

I left no cheese untasted, which puts me in the excellent position of telling you more about these cheeses.

And that was long before the OFFICIAL Miyoko’s Creamery went into production.

My First Taste of Miyoko’s Cheese

My first taste was of Miyoko’s Double Cream Chive, which comes in the Harvest Collection.

To be honest, I was trepidacious about tasting yet another ‘vegan’ cheese.  I don’t know about you, but up to that moment I had never tasted a commercial non-dairy cheese that I liked.  They were either rubbery, grainy, or in some other way made me wince. Not so with these cheeses. Back to the story.

On that day, I helpe

From there I progressed to the harder stuff like sharp cheddar rolled in smokey paprika, and one of my personal favorites, High Sierra Rustic Alpine – also in the Harvest Collection.

I must have tasted a dozen varieties that day, and haven’t found a one that I haven’t absolutely adored.

Since then, I’ve enjoyed Miyoko’s cheeses at multiple other events – it seems to be the offering of choice at classy events wherever I go.

Look What Fed Ex Delivered

When the eagerly anticipated Miyoko’s Kitchen went into official production and shipping, I was one of the first in line to order.

I took snapshots as I unpacked, so I could share it with you.

Dinner Party Timing

It just so happened that my package arrived on the same day that I was hosting a dinner party.

For better of worse – great for my lucky guests – and of course serving this delightful food is great for your image!

At the same time I was afraid it would all rapidly disappear.  Taking the best advice I ever got – “Err on the side of generous” – I shifted into give mode and shared the Harvest Collection with my guests.

These good friends, omnivorous eaters –  not only loved every bite, they snagged one of the charming boxes that the cheeses come in so that they could get news about it pronto to their high-end Hollywood lawyer, certain it would be a perfect match for their high class tastes yet down-to-earth penchant for organic food.

Whether you snap up some of this cheese – actually a cultured nut product – or as a gift for yourself, this product stands on its own as delicious food, but also is a great way to demonstrate the power of plant-based foods when it comes to good taste.

“I’d go vegan, but I just can’t give up cheese.”

Have you heard this before?  Or even said it yourself?

From the Miyoko’s Kitchen website:

Indeed – the lure of cheese is strong, and many of us have fallen to its siren call. We hope to be able to answer that call with the most delectable whole-foods, plant-based cheeses in the world! Our products were created by Miyoko Schinner, who embarked on a mission to recreate the range of flavors and textures she had once enjoyed from dairy cheeses before becoming vegan. Several years of experimentation culminated in the publication of her groundbreaking book, Artisan Vegan Cheese (Book Publishing Co., 2012), which she hoped would inspire others to make their own.

Despite the success of the book, people frequently requested that she simply make and sell them. She knew that in order to succeed, she would need a passionate business partner with whom to launch and grow the business. She soon met Lisa Shanower, and the two of them embarked on their cheese journey to create Miyoko’s Kitchen. The two of them assembled an amazing team of passionate vegans with expertise in different areas, and Miyoko’s Kitchen was born!

figleafcheeseWhat’s In It?

Clearly established on each box and featured prominently on the Miyoko’s Kitchen website are the ingredients of each variety.

The company clearly prefers the term ‘cultured nut product’ and makes great celebration of it in the pictures on the website.

Here is a screen grab of the ingredients for the Fresh Loire Valley in a Fig Leaf – this is printed on the back of each box.

Non-GMO, organic ingredients.  This is a product with integrity.

It is not a low-calorie item, as nuts are a high fat food.  But you knew that – and that this is a special treat item.  As Miyoko says it “feeds the soul”.
