In case you haven’t met the good Dr. McDougall….(is it possible?)
A physician and nutrition expert who teaches better health through vegetarian cuisine, Dr. John McDougall has been studying, writing and “speaking out” about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 36 years. He believes that people should look, feel great and enjoy optimal health for a lifetime. Unfortunately, many people compromise their health unknowingly through poor dietary habits.
Dr. McDougall is the founder and medical director of the nationally renowned McDougall Program, a ten-day, residential program located at a luxury resort in Santa Rosa, CA — a place where medical miracles occur through proper diet and lifestyle changes. Dr. McDougall has cared for more than five thousand patients over almost 4 decades of medical practice and has run a highly successful live-in program for more than 26 years. Dr. McDougall has developed a nourishing , low-fat, starch-based diet that not only promotes a broad range of dramatic and lasting health benefits such as weight (fat) loss, but most importantly can also reverse serious illness, such as heart disease, without drugs.
As with many leaders of public opinion, he often finds it necessary to challenge the accepted wisdom of the time, and was one of the first traditional physicians of the medical “establishment” to assert that adoption of a vegetarian diet can reverse unfavorable medical conditions such as heart disease. Medical research is now confirming this assertion. And slowly but surely, medical practitioners are accepting it. Dr. McDougall is the author of several national bestsellers including: The Starch Solution; “The McDougall Plan; 12 Days to Dynamic Health”, “McDougall’s Medicine”, “A Challenging Second Opinion; The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss”, “The New McDougall Cookbook”, “The McDougall Program for Women”, and The “McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart”.

I live in Wales, UK, so am not going to listen to you Teleclass with Dr McDougall as I will very likely be asleep when it is happening. I do, however, have a couple of questions I would like to put to him about his book The Starch Solution. First I like to tell something of myself. I have been vegan for almost 20 years now. Most of that time I have been very healthy and fit. A few years ago I hit a really rough patch in my life and while trying to deal with all that my consumption of things not healthy (still vegan though) shot up even without me really noticing. I thought the increase in weight was an inevitable result of getting older. The results of a health check I was invited to attend by a nurse at my doctor’s surgery one and a half years ago shocked me into looking at my life and what I was doing to myself. I have written an article about my journey back to health which was published in New Leaves issue no 104, a quarterly journal of the Movement for Compassionate Living, which I edit with the help of two other people. (If you are interested it is on our website as a free download http://www.mclveganway.org.uk/new_leaves.html) I am still on that journey and still looking at all kinds of information about health and fitness. That is how I stumbled on your website. I also stumbled on Dr McDougall’s article about the paleo diet just over a month ago. That really impressed me so I checked his website where I found information about the above mentioned book. I bought it because I was curious about the promise it gave on the cover. “Eat the foods you love, regain your health, and lose weight for good!” And it has a picture of a potato on the cover! The book was a revelation for me as the information I had been gathering for the past year or so recommended reducing or totally eliminating potatoes from my diet. After reading the book I started thinking back to my childhood on a small farm in Finland. I tried to remember if I had known any really fat or obese people there. I could not remember one. The main food of my childhood was potatoes and bread. Vegetables, fruits, berries and mushrooms according to season added to them. Usual drink was cow’s milk or home made juice. Meat, cheese or eggs were included in small quantities, never really as a main thing. I found it strange in UK to come across the idea that meat dish was the main thing at the table. I have found it liberating to be able to go back to my childhood foods (minus animal products). I do not follow the McDougall diet strictly as I had regained my health before reading the book. I still want to lose a kilo or two, but my waist measurement is within the healthy figure. I read that that is a better indication of health than BMI, which is also good for me now. My clothes are two sizes smaller than they were less than two years ago.
The questions I have about the book:
Dr McDougall does not recommend any supplements (with a possible exception of vitamin B12), but does not include glucosamine in that. My ignorance is coming through here – I thought that was a supplement also. I do take it. What about CoQ10? I take that too and it states on the product that it is a dietary supplement.
The book says that you can heat the food in the microwave oven. I have read report which states that microwaves destroy nutrients and if I remember right mutate some things into something really bad. When I first heard of microwaves it was stated that you should not heat babymilk in it. That surely indicates that it does do some damage. Then only yesterday I watched a clip on internet which showed that broccoli heated in the microwave oven for two minutes had many nutrients left, but heated for five minutes it had much less nutrients left. (If you are interested I can send you the report about microwaves. I have saved it somewhere on usb but have to find it first – not very organised.)
One question not related to the book: what causes gallstones? I stated in my article that they were probably caused by my early Finnish diet. Since then I have thought about it and wonder if it could have been the UK diet with more animal products than the Finnish diet. I did not become vegan until almost 20 years after moving to UK.
I am planning to write about the book in the next issue of New Leaves. It probably will not be a straight review. The last time I thought of writing a review it turned into an article which mentioned the book I meant to review and quoted from it. It is also on the website in issue 102 “Animal Rights – Human Wrongs”.
I am leaving questions here for the telecast Aug 1 with Dr. McDougall,
Ate fruit, veggie, nothing Matra diet since Jan 1 2012 no cheating . 4 mos blood workup saw very little improvement in LDL/ HDL numbers~but my triglyerides skyrocketed. It was very discouraging to say the least. I have been cheating lately so….
New blood check yesterday: HDL 48 LDL 125 Triglyerides actually improved from 322 to 214?? makes no sense to me.
C protein test and particles: Inflammation is 6.3 (so bad), LDL particles are 132 HDL particles are 155.
Dr. wanting me to take meds now, Zocor and Tircor(why do I need two statins)?? I am MOST worried about the inflammation~~I want to get that waaaay down. and I don’t want to take 2 medications…what do you suggest? are there less harmful meds I can try? and how can I tweak my diet to focus on the inflammation?
thank you so very much…you can’t know how much I appreciate your advice. thank you for the telecast!

Dr. MyDougal
Thank you for the webcast tonight. I enjoyed listening. Unfortunatly, my question didn’t get asked, so I thought I’d ask you here. I am gluten and grain intolerant and tested positive for 3 out of 4 DLQ genes plus I have hyothyroidism and adrenal fatigue. I was a vegeterien for ten years and a vegan for one year before that. I long to eat a plant based diet again, however, my Dr’s have told me that I must eat high protein and low carb to heal and balance my thyroid and adrenals. Would you please share your opinion on that?
Thank you very much
Robbie
Hi Robbie!
Lots of questions we didn’t have time for – they’ll be in the queue for next time!
In the meantime, have you seen doc McDougall’s article on thyroid:

Hey Robbie,
Hopefully your question will get addressed on the next call. Thanks so much for your participation – we had soooo many questions in the queue!
Please let me know if Co Q10 is worth taking if you are on a statin drug.
Hi Patrick!
This is a question best posed to your doctor or dietitian.
Best,
Lani
