Help, I’m Stuck!

There are five main reasons why people falter along the way or simply revert to old practices of eating and exercise, completely interrupting their strides to get healthy, lose weight, restore energy levels – and often all three.

They are pretty sure this is where they want to go, yet they are stuck. Usually this is due to one or more of the following:

  1. They are not clear on their ‘why’ for going plant-based.
  2. They do not have a basic understanding of the simple basics of plant-based nutrition and eating.
  3. They are not consistently being prepared with the foods they need to gain the health and lose the weight they so desire.
  4. They have not yet discovered and/or addressed the underyling problems that are getting in the way of their success.
  5. They have not invested in developing some kind of mastery over their habits of thinking.

Of these, #5 is the biggest reason because it underpins #1-#4.

Without this critical piece – some degree of mastery over our practices of thinking – even the best food plan is not sustainable.

You can have an exemplary diet plan, yet it’s like paint on a wall that doesn’t have a good base coat.  It may last for awhile, but eventually will start to flake, chip, and bleed through.  The foundation – the underpinning of mindfulness mastery – gives the whole thing luster and durability.

Though you may be familiar with the basics of plant-based living, connecting again with your reasons for going plant-based – detailed in Chapter One of The Plant-Based Journey – Making the Plant-Based Connection – may be pivotal to getting you back on track.  This is a available to you as a free download preview edition of Journey, which includes the Preface, Foreword, Introduction and Chapter One. The simple basics of plant-based nutrition – including the five food groups, the three food categories, top seven kitchen tools for success and more are presented in simple, easy fashion in Section Two – Scout.  If you find your inspiration falling apart once you hit the kitchen or cupboard, it simply means you need to discover a few simple basics for having the right food ready. And if you attended an event that got you all fired up about plant-based nutrition and yet once you tried getting started at home things fell apart, the simple steps for how to do just that are detailed here.

In Section Three, Rookie, get new insights and ideas by discovering how to plant-base the foods you already love.  If you tried abandoning all the flavors to which you are familiar, it can backfire. Building on familiar tastes is one of the keys to success.

Maybe some new meal ideas will give you the boost you need. Section Three has multiple meal templates and dozens of simple ways to sneak more plants onto your plate, plantify meals, how to rapidly create your own go-to meals, an Easy Meal Planner,  and more.

Another obstacle that can derail your journey is food pushers and a desperate need to develop skills around friend and family who might be less than supportive of your healthy ideals.  These are simple skills that can be learned and get you onr your way to success. Or maybe you’re doing great with your food plan at home, but once you leave the doorstep, go on vacation, or simply to work, the food falls apart. Section Four:  Rockstar – taking Plant-Based to a Bigger Stage is jammed with guidance about these situations that can, with a little practice, be successfully navigated.

These Key Articles are Perfect for the Bullhorn

If you’ve been on the journey for awhile, you are well aware that some questions and comments that seem to present themselves over and over again.  Such as “Where do you get your protein?” and “Where do you get your calcium?” and “I could never give up my comfort foods!”, and “Where do you get your protein?” (again).

As a matter of fact, you may start to feel like you need to be a dietitian, nutritionist, doctor, and gourmet chef all at once!  And being presented with these questions over and over again can seem annoying.

If so, then I suggest you shift your position to one of “happy to share”.  Some people will ask questions about your food plan in combative fashion.  While this can create instant discomfort on your part, realize that simply by making a different, healthier choice, some people feel uncomfortable and defensive about their own choices.  It really has nothing to do with you.  And these can be opportunities to share information and plant seeds.  As long as you remain somewhat detached from the outcomes, and share in the true spirit of sharing, you can have completely different outcomes.

While you don’t need to be the doctor or dietitian, it is good to be armed with a few basic facts about plant-based nutrition.  But beyond that, simply be prepared to share resources so that the truly curious can investigate for themselves.
